Narita Airport (airport code: NRT), located in the town of Narita nearly 70 km north-east of Tokyo, is the main international gateway for the city as well as the country of Japan. It is the main international hub for Japan Airlines and all Nippon Airways and an Asian regional hub for Northwest Airlines and United Airlines. There are many ways to travel between Narita Airport and central Tokyo. For a first-time visitor, suffering jet-lag, laden with luggage and holding a reservation for a major hotel, the easiest option is often to take the Limousine Bus direct to the hotel. A close second is taking one of the express trains to Tokyo or Ueno Station and then transferring to a taxi for the final leg. If taking the bus, note that traffic jams can cause you to reach your destination a lot later than you were told when you boarded.
Haneda Airport (airport code: HND), officially known as Tokyo International Airport, is the busiest airport in all Asia despite being (almost) entirely limited to domestic traffic. The easiest and most scenic way from Haneda to the city is the Tokyo Monorail with a station in each terminal running to Hamamatsucho, from where you can connect to almost anywhere in Tokyo on the JR Yamanote line. The other, slightly cheaper alternative is the private Keikyu line, which has a single station between the terminals and runs to Shinagawa and Yokohama. Keikyu also runs trains to Haneda from the Toei Asakusa subway line, and even a few direct services to Narita.
