Keflavik International Airport (airport code: KEF) is the largest airport in Iceland and the country’s main hub for international transportation. The airport is located 50 KM from Reykjavik in the town of Keflavik. The inexpensive Flybus service leaves the airport 35-40 minutes after the arrival of each flight. The Flybus terminal in Reykjavik is at Hotel Loftleiðir and the bus stops at Hafnarfjörður and Garðabær en route to the city. Free onwards transfers are available to all major hotels, the Youth Hostel, Laugardalur camping area and the domestic airport. Two taxi companies also operate from a rank outside the arrivals hall. Reykjavik Airport (airport code: RKV), located in the center of Reykjavik, normally only serves flights within Iceland and to Greenland and the Faroe Islands, as well small international charters, ferry flights over the Atlantic, and private flights.
As the capital and largest city of Iceland, Reykjavik is served by several airlines. Icelandair, the main international carrier of Iceland, offers non-stop international flights from the USA and Canada, with gateways in New York City, Boston, Halifax, Toronto, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Orlando (Sanford), and Seattle. Destinations beyond Iceland include most major European cities (i.e. Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Helsinki, London, Oslo, Madrid, Manchester, Milan, Munich, Paris, Bergen and Gothenburg), with Icelandair’s hub-and-spoke network connecting via Keflavik in Iceland. (Please note that some destinations are seasonal.) Iceland Express is another international carrier which serves many European cities. Air Iceland, the main domestic airline, has daily domestic flights to Akureyri, Egilsstadir, Isafjordur and Vestmannaeyjar, including international destinations to Faroe Islands, Kulusuk, Narsarsuaq, and Constable Point.
The peak season in Reykjavik extends from June to August when there is close to 24 hours daylight per day. During this time, in order to get cheap international flights to Reykjavik, you’d better book well in advance (2-3 months before you go).
